Photonic Integrated Circuits for Passive Optical Networks: Outlook and Case Study of Integrated Quasi-Coherent Receiver

Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) are taking a major role in the telecommunications and datacenter markets. The increased complexity of coexisting fast evolving standards for Passive Optical Networks (PONs) suggests introduction PICs will be next step PON related optoelectronics. ecosystem has greatly matured past years, becoming solution that can cope with requirements industry academia, presenting flexibility combining multiple platforms available towards viable commercial solutions. In this review, evolution PONs is presented, focus on optoelectronic integration coherent PONs. To demonstrate potential their combination electronics, quasi-coherent receiver based co-hosted PIC Application Specific Circuit (ASIC) presented characterized.
